South Boston known among locals as "Southie" and famous from such films as The Departed and other stories of crime kingpin Whitey Bulger, the area has undergone a renaissance in recent years and is now more well-known for its desirable real estate (especially in the East Side), nightlife, and revitalized waterfront district. The Fort Point Channel District is also part of Southie, and home to one of New England's largest artists' communities, housing painters, sculptors, photographers, designers, and others. As an old and tightly knit community, South Boston still offers a strong complement of community resources for its residents, and the neighborhood's West Side still maintains much of the flavor of the old Southie. The area also possesses a number of historic sites with relevance to the American Revolution, including Fort Independence, Castle Island, and Thomas Park.
The MBTA Red Line stops in South Boston at Andrew and Broadway, and South Station, with commuter rail, Amtrak, and Greyhound access, is nearby. Several bus routes run through, including the 5, 7, 9, 10, and 11. Logan Airport is easily accessible via either Interstate 90 or the Silver Line, and Interstate 93 is close by as well.
